FAQGate questions
Stuck gates, manual releases, sensors, brands, and how this referral line works.
Are you a gate company?
No. STL Gate Repair is a referral line. When you call or send a request, we pass it to an independent local gate pro who serves your area. They quote and do the work, and they're responsible for it. We're not affiliated with any gate or opener manufacturer.
My gate is stuck open. What do I do tonight?
First make sure nobody is in the gate's path. If the opener is dead, switch off its power and use the manual release (see your manual) to close the gate by hand. A chain and padlock can hold it shut until it's fixed, if that's safe to do. Then call us.
My gate is stuck closed and my car is inside.
With power off, the manual release lets most gates be opened by hand. If it won't move, or it's damaged, don't force it. Call (314) 673-5554 and say it's urgent.
Is it safe to open the gate by hand?
Usually, if you switch the power off first and use the release as the manual shows. Don't try it if the gate is damaged, off its hinges or leaning.
Why does my gate stop and go back?
Most often the opener feels resistance (drag, ice, wind, a binding hinge) or a safety device sees something. Clean and check the photo eyes, clear the path, and see if the gate moves freely by hand with the power off.
Can I bypass the photo eyes so the gate closes?
Please don't. Safety devices are there to prevent people, kids and pets from being trapped or hit. If they're the problem, a pro can fix or realign them.
Which opener brands do the pros work on?
Local gate pros work on many common brands, including LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, Apollo, US Automatic, Viking, DoorKing and FAAC. We list names only so you can tell us what you have. We're not a dealer or authorized service center for any of them.
My solar opener dies every winter. Why?
Shorter days, a shaded panel and an aging battery are the usual reasons. Batteries wear out after some years. A pro can test the battery and panel and check how much the gate is running.
Can you give me a price?
We don't set prices. The pro quotes after hearing about the job or seeing the gate. Gate repairs vary a lot, from a remote battery to a new operator.
Do you take HOA and commercial gates?
Yes. It's quickest when the manager or someone who can approve the work makes the request.
Do you cover Illinois?
Yes, the Metro East is covered: Edwardsville, Belleville, O'Fallon IL, Glen Carbon, Collinsville and nearby. Put your ZIP on the form.
What about porch railings or an iron fence?
That's our sister line, STL Railing Repair: (314) 673-1016 or stlrailingrepair.com.
